This month, COL Tim Coffin assumed responsibility as the new Deputy Commander of Operations for Army Space and Missile Command/Army Forces Strategic Command (SMDC/ARSTRAT). COL Coffin replaces BG Kurt Story, who had been the Deputy Commanding General for the organization since July 2008.
General Story has been reassigned as the J-33 Director, United States Forces-Iraq, OPERATION NEW DAWN, Iraq. Lt Gen Richard Formica, Commanding General, SMDC/ARSTRAT (headquartered in Huntsville, Alabama) noted, “BG Story has done a marvelous job providing leadership to the operational elements of SMDC/ARSTRAT that include the 1st Space Brigade and the 100th Missile Defense Brigade.” COL Coffin returns to Colorado Springs after an assignment ass the J3 and J7 – Director of Operations, Training, and Exercises for the Joint Functional Component Command for Space, US Strategic Command, at Vandenberg AFB, California. He had previously commanded, in Colorado Springs, the 1st Space Brigade (SMDC/ARSTRAT) from 2006-2008. USASMDC/ARSTRAT conducts space and missile defense operations and provides planning, integration, control and coordination of Army forces and capabilities in support of U.S. Strategic Command missions (strategic deterrence, integrated missile defense, and space operations); serves as the Army force modernization proponent for space, high altitude and global missile defense; serves as the Army operational integrator for global missile defense; and conducts mission-related research and development in support of Army Title 10 responsibilities.
